About Oscar

Young Oscar - Blue Line.jpg

I’ve called Long Beach home since 2014, but my connection to this city began much earlier. In 1990, my parents first brought me here for the opening of the Blue Line. Even as a young child, I remember being struck by the energy of the city and the sense of community.

I was born in LA and raised in Koreatown, surrounded by the cultural richness that makes Southern California unique. I also came of age during a difficult time in LA, witnessing the unrest of the early 1990s and the impact of gang violence on many communities. Those experiences shaped my belief that strong neighborhoods depend on safety, opportunity, and leaders who stay engaged with the people they serve.

I attended Harvard-Westlake School on scholarship. It wasn’t always easy, but the experience challenged me to push myself and stay focused on my goals. During those years I relied on public transit to get to and from school and worked part-time during my junior and senior years to help support my single father. Those experiences taught me resilience, independence, and the value of hard work—lessons that continue to guide me today.

In 2004, I set off to Bates College in Lewiston, Maine where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English. While there, I served as captain of the ice hockey team, held leadership roles on campus, and was selected as a Harward Center Fellow, a program focused on community engagement and volunteer service. I also worked as a teacher in nearby school districts in Lewiston and Auburn and, after graduating, began my career at Bates as an Assistant Dean of Admissions.

Like many residents, I see both the incredible potential of Long Beach and the challenges we face. Rather than remain complacent, I decided to step forward and run for Mayor. I believe our city deserves leadership that listens, values transparency, and works every day to improve the quality of life for the people who call Long Beach home.

You'll often find me walking along the Greenbelt, supporting local restaurants, and staying connected with neighbors and community members across the city.
